Chairman Steil Questions Nevada Secretary of State Over Voter File Coding Errors

Letter

Date: March 4, 2024
Location: Washington
Issues: Elections

Dear Mr. Secretary:
As Chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on House Administration, which has broad oversight of our nation’s federal elections, I write today to express my concerns about reports regarding coding errors in files used to update voter registration history during Nevada’s recent presidential preference primary. While I am pleased to hear that the errors likely had no impact on the reported results of the primary election, incidents like these not only undermine public trust, but also jeopardize the foundational principles of freedom, fairness, and security of our electoral systems.
For Americans to have confidence in our elections, they do not need a zero-mistake system but instead one where mistakes are identified and corrected. With the proper procedures in place to find and correct election errors, voters will have the confidence necessary to have faith in the election results. Furthermore, as we approach the general election in November,
voters need the confidence that this error will not repeat itself.

In response, please explain the facts surrounding this issue, including how it was discovered, and identify what steps your office has taken to:
(i) learn from this coding error and ensure proper steps are taken by all election officials;
(ii) further train election officials on nightly voter registration update protocols;
(iii) minimize further errors during Nevada’s transition to a new voter registration database;
(iv) prepare for the June 2024 primary election and November’s general election; and
(v) restore voter confidence in Nevada’s electoral process.
Please send your response and any questions by March 22, 2024, to Caleb Hays, General Counsel and Deputy Staff Director,
at caleb.hays@mail.house.gov
