Governor Reeves Statement on Anniversary of Dobbs Decision

Press Release

Date: June 23, 2023
Location: Jackson, MS
Issues: Abortion

"One year ago, Mississippi led the nation to the greatest conservative victory in a generation -- the overturning of Roe v. Wade. While I'm incredibly proud of this victory for life, winning a court case was never our true objective. Rather, it was building a culture of life throughout America and Mississippi.

"Today in Mississippi, we've continued to implement our New Pro-Life Agenda, strengthen support for every mom and child who lives here, and make our state the easiest in the nation to raise a family.

"Since the Dobbs decision and shuttering of Mississippi's last abortion clinic, thousands of young lives have been saved in our state and tens of thousands more across America. Because of that, over the coming years, we will increasingly share our state with people who were given the chance to live because of this decision. They will attend Mississippi schools, they will shop at Mississippi stores, they will worship at Mississippi churches, and they will raise Mississippi kids. We should all support that.

"I've long said that continuing to build a culture of life and implement the New Pro-life Agenda will not be easy and it will not be free. But it's the right thing to do for moms and babies, and Mississippi is committed to doing it. That's why I'm so proud of the work our state has done over the last year to accomplish that mission.

"I signed House Bill 1671 which expands the tax credit for pregnancy resource centers across the state to $10 million.

"I signed House Bill 510 which established a foster parents bill of rights.

"I signed Senate Bill 2696 which created an income tax credit for qualified adoption expenses.

"I signed Senate Bill 2212 extending postpartum care for Mississippi mothers.

"I signed House Bill 1625 which gave the Mississippi Department of Child Protection Services (CPS) the largest budget in its history, and the funding it needed to more effectively support Mississippi children.

"I signed House Bill 1318 which increased the opportunities available for parents to choose adoption by authorizing safe haven baby boxes across our state.

"I signed Senate Bill 2384 which established the Mississippi Task Force on Foster Care and Adoption.

"And I signed House Bill 1149 which established CPS as its own agency, giving it the ability to draw down more federal funds to support Mississippi families.

"Again, overturning Roe v. Wade was just the beginning. We will never waver in our pursuit to expand the cause of life. Each day we are seeking to better welcome new Mississippians into the world, and each day we are seeking to better support Mississippi mothers. All of us play a role in this mission.

"Each life saved will be another victory for Mississippi. May we never rest until all unborn children have the chance to experience their God-given right to life. God bless Mississippi!"
