Booker Statement on DOJ Investigation Into Louisville Metro Police Department

Statement

Date: March 8, 2023
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Senator Cory Booker (D-N.J.), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, issued the following statement in response to the findings of the Justice Department's Civil Rights investigation into the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD).

"Breonna Taylor's murder shook the world and prompted the Justice Department's investigation of the Louisville Metro Police Department. Today's announcement that the department engages in a pattern or practice of unconstitutional behavior is heartbreaking confirmation that Ms. Taylor is not the only person to suffer in her community because of these abuses, including the use of excessive force, discrimination against Black residents and people with behavioral health disabilities, and unlawful searches, detentions, and arrests. I am hopeful for the people of Louisville and the officers of the Louisville Metro Police Department that the city and the Justice Department will work together to implement reforms that increase police accountability, transparency, and professionalism and fulfill our nation's ideals of liberty and justice for all.

"Change must not stop there. The Department of Justice alone cannot vindicate the rights of the thousands of people across the country who have been subjected to police misconduct. Congress must act. Since 2020, I have worked with my colleagues in the Senate to reach an agreement on long overdue reforms to improve policing practices, including dangerous search warrant executions like the one that killed Breonna Taylor. It is time we deliver meaningful legislation to improve public safety and policing in our country."
