Dingell Introduces Bills to Create River Raisin National Battlefield Park

Congressman Works to Protect Historic Site of Battles from The War of 1812

Washington, DC - Congressman John D. Dingell (MI-15) has introduced two pieces of legislation that will eventually create the River Raisin National Battlefield Park in Monroe County. The first piece, to be known as the "River Raisin National Battlefield Study Act", would authorize a National Park study of the site. The second piece, which is called the "River Raisin Battlefield Acquisition Act", would authorize the conveyance of the land from landowners to the Interior Department and ultimately to the National Park Service. Dingell said this about the two bills:

"The River Raisin has an important place in our State's and our Nation's history. The massacre of Americans there during the War of 1812 stirred a national outrage. We have a duty to protect it for our children so they can learn about the battles and appreciate those who died to protect that land. The National Park Service is the best outfit to carry out such a task. I can't think of a better way to, as American troops used to say, "Remember the Raisin?!"

"This legislation is an extension of the good work also being done at the local level by Mayor Cappuccilli and other city, county and state officials. I very much look forward to continuing the cooperation on all levels of government to protect this remarkable piece of American history in perpetuity."

If approved by Congress, the study would determine the national significance of the sites and the suitability and feasibility of including the sites in the National Park System. In addition, the study will include the analysis and recommendations of the Secretary of the Interior on the effect on Monroe County, Michigan, of including the sites in the National Park System; and whether the sites could be included in an existing unit of the National Park System.
