Malliotakis: House Steps in to Fix Biden's Mess, One Step Closer to Averting Rail Strike

Press Release

Date: Nov. 30, 2022
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11) applauded the passage of H. J. Res. 100, legislation to adopt the terms of the September 2022 Tentative Agreement and resolve the dispute between freight railroads and rail workers to avert a labor strike that could devastate the U.S. economy. The resolution is supported by the freight railroads, shippers, and eight of the twelve labor unions.

"As I've been advocating for over the past week, the House stepped in and brought us one step closer to averting a disastrous rail strike that would further drive up energy and food prices, impact the availability of goods, and cost the U.S. economy $2 billion a day," Malliotakis said. "President Biden failed to help strike a deal between the railroad industry and labor unions and instead dumped the responsibility on Congress' lap. Without Republican support, Democrats in Congress would not have been able to pass this resolution to avert a strike. At a time when American families are struggling to put food on the table, fill up their gas tanks, and keep the lights on in their homes, keeping our economy moving is critical to ensuring the stability of our nation. President Biden couldn't get the job done, and I urge the Senate to follow the House in passing this resolution to fix the mess he created."

Malliotakis is a member of the House Committee on Transportation & Infrastructure where she serves on the Highways and Transit and Coast Guard and Maritime Transporation Subcommittees. In recent weeks, Malliotakis has been outspoken
about the need for Congress to step in and avert a strike should a deal not be met between the industry and unions.
