U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Europe and Regional Security Cooperation and a senior member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, issued the following joint statement with U.S. Senators Thom Tillis (R-NC) and Chris Murphy (D-CT) in response to the United Nations Security Council's extension of the European Union Force in Bosnia and Herzegovina (EUFOR) mandate. Earlier this month, the lawmakers wrote a letter to the Biden administration on the importance of the EUFOR mandate and urged the development of a comprehensive strategy towards Bosnia and Herzegovina. Shaheen recently returned from a trip to the Western Balkans, and the Senators traveled to the region together in April.

"We're encouraged by the U.N. Security Council's renewal of the EUFOR mandate and are pleased to see increased U.S. leadership on Bosnia and the broader region. This action demonstrates our longstanding commitment to peace and prosperity in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Moving forward, it is critical that the United States continues to build on this progress by establishing a comprehensive U.S. policy toward Bosnia and Herzegovina and takes additional steps to strengthen U.S.-Balkan ties. As sponsors of legislation to meet that goal through economic development of infrastructure, trade and anti-corruption in the region, we'll work with lawmakers in Congress to increase support for our proposal. It is in the interest of the United States and the global community to see Bosnia and Herzegovina, along with other nations in the region, be successful in their greater Euro-Atlantic integration aspirations with the hopes of building democratic futures for their citizens," said the Senators.

Senator Shaheen is leading bipartisan legislation in the U.S. Senate to strengthen U.S.-Balkan ties, which both Senators Tillis and Murphy co-sponsor.
