Today, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01) released the following statement after President Biden announced $10,000 in student debt relief for borrowers making under $125,000 and an additional $10,000 for Pell Grant recipients.

"I'm glad President Biden is canceling a portion of student debt and extending the pause on loan payments as we continue to work on student loan forgiveness and lowering the cost of college. This is a vital first step for Americans," said Larson. "I have heard from constituents who cannot afford to buy homes, start families, or buy their basic necessities because of crushing student loan debt, and that is why I have called on the President to take this action.

"Today, millions will breathe easier because President Biden has used his executive power to offer working-class Americans much-needed relief," Larson continued. "We will continue the fight in Congress to address college's rising costs and ensure every American can access the education they need to provide for themselves and their family."

Rep. Larson is a cosponsor of H. Res. 100, which calls on the President to use his executive authority to forgive student loan debt and has introduced ACTION for National Service to ensure young people who serve two full terms of service are rewarded with an educational benefit equal to four years of average in-state tuition. He is also a cosponsor Rep. Courtney's Zero-Percent Student Loan Refinancing Act, which would require the federal government allow for interest free student loan refinancing.
