Rep. Calvert Votes to Expand Access to Contraceptives

Press Release

Date: July 21, 2022
Issues: Reproduction

Today Rep. Ken Calvert (R-CA) voted for the Republican Motion to Recommit to expand access to contraceptives.

"Once again, Democrats are attempting to distract from their disastrous economic, border and crime policies by attempting to create a controversy where there is none. Rather than bringing to the House floor a clean bill that creates a statutory right to access contraception, respects conscience protections for physicians, and ensures the medications are FDA approved, Democrats chose to put forward a bill that strips protections for religious health care providers, puts women and minors at risk by opening the door for non-FDA approved drugs, and of course they could not help themselves by putting disgraceful anti-American rhetoric in the bill.

"Democrats have proven they are incapable of governing and instead lurch from crisis to crisis, hoping the American people will be distracted by their theatrics. Americans want relief at the gas pump and the grocery store; they want to feel safe in their communities with robust law enforcement; and they want operational control of our borders, so we know who is coming into our country. Unfortunately, the Democrats agenda includes more spending which will exacerbate the inflation crisis, defunding and villainizing local law enforcement, and opening our borders with no checks and pushing amnesty. Today's vote was simply more evidence of their disastrous agenda that is completely divorced from the reality of most Americans."

Rep. Calvert Supports:

H.R. 8421, the Access to Safe Contraception Act of 2022

Prevents any state from banning FDA approved contraception for use as contraception.
Preserves conscience protections for health care providers.
Maintains state regulation of the practice of medicine and pharmacy.
States have the authority to regulate the space short of banning.
H.R. 8428, the Allowing Greater Access to Safe and Effective Contraception Act (Motion to Recommit)

Allows women to access FDA-approved birth control pills over the counter.
Women need to be prescribed oral contraceptives intended for routine use by a physician, in contrast Plan B is accessible over the counter.
Legislation requires the FDA to give priority review to already-approved oral contraceptives for routine use (not emergency contraception) to be available over the counter for adult women.
Not for women under 18.
Repeals flexible spending account contribution limits and waives IRS "stockpiling" rules for routine-use oral contraception.
