At today's House Committee on Oversight and Reform hearing on abortion access, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) highlighted the unique risks faced by District of Columbia residents post-Roe. Because D.C. lacks the full rights and protections of statehood and is under Congress' control, a future Republican Congress could ban all abortions in the District.
"The Supreme Court's decision in Dobbs makes it even more urgent that we grant statehood to D.C., and protect the rights of D.C. residents to make decisions about their own bodies, futures and livelihoods," Norton said. "Statehood is the best way for D.C. to protect abortion access for its residents and to prevent Republicans from enacting prohibitions on reproductive health care."
