Today, U.S. Congressman Larry Bucshon, M.D. (R-Ind.-08) released the following statement after voting in support of the Suspending Energy Imports from Russia Act (H.R. 6968). This bill prohibits the U.S. from importing energy from Russia and would seek Russia's suspension from the World Trade Organization.

"Tonight's vote to pass the Suspending Energy Imports from Russia Act to ban imports of Russian energy is an important signal to Putin that the United States does not support his unprovoked invasion of Ukraine. However, instead of turning to America's own energy sector to provide the oil and gas needed to power our nation, the Biden Administration is asking countries like Iran and Venezuela to compensate for the ban on Russian imports -- all while ignoring American energy producers.

"We have a capable and robust energy sector that can effectively meet the energy needs of our nation, as proven through the policies of the previous Administration. Instead of building on that momentum, however, President Biden and his Administration have chosen to weaken America's energy infrastructure and increase our dependence on foreign oil. To ensure our own energy security, we must stop seeking energy from dictators who oppress their own people and instead prioritize American energy producers who support jobs and businesses at home," said Dr. Bucshon.
