U.S. Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock (D-GA), who has long pushed for a short suspension of the federal gas tax, today released the following statement in response to President Biden's potential action on gas prices this week. This weekend, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said the gas tax holiday is "certainly worth considering" following Senator Warnock's introduction of the Gas Prices Relief Act in February, which would lower high gas prices by temporarily suspending the federal gas tax through the end of the year while allowing Treasury to use the general fund to protect the Highway Trust Fund from lost revenue.

"For months I've been fighting to suspend the federal gas tax so we can provide relief at the pump for hardworking Georgia families," said Senator Reverend Warnock. "I'm pleased that President Biden is finally listening to me and my colleagues about the urgent importance of taking this step to lower costs for Georgians across the state."

In addition to introducing legislation to lower the price of gas by 18 cents a gallon, Senator Warnock has successfully pressured the White House to immediately increase scrutiny of big oil companies for making record profits while Georgians are paying record profits.

Senator Warnock has championed lowering costs for Georgians during his first year in the Senate. He's introduced legislation to cap the cost of insulin at $35 a month and limit the cost of prescription drugs for seniors to $2,000 a person per year. The Senator also introduced legislation to lower the cost of essential goods by giving states the flexibility to use COVID-19 dollars to fund a sales tax holiday and successfully lobbied the White House to investigate apparent price gouging by shipping carriers.
