Murphy Applauds Senate Passage of Postal Service Reform Act

U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) on Tuesday released the following statement after the Senate voted 79-19 to pass the bipartisan Postal Service Reform Act of 2022:

"Sometimes we take the Post Office for granted, but for years it's been on really unsound financial footing. America's economy relies on a healthy USPS, and this bill solves the postal service's financial problems, improves mail delivery, and makes sure we take care of our postal workers who have worked tirelessly throughout the pandemic. This a big step toward protecting the longevity of USPS, and I look forward to President Biden signing it into law," said Murphy.

The Postal Service Reform Act of 2022 would eliminate the onerous prefunding requirement that has hurt the Postal Service financially, and integrate postal worker retirees' health care with Medicare. Together, these two reforms would create more than $49 billion in savings for the Postal Service over the next ten years. The bill would also require the Postal Service to maintain its standard of delivering at least six days a week and require the publication of easily accessible local weekly service data on the Postal Service website, as well as regular and detailed reporting to Congress on Postal Service finances and operations.
