Today, Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02) supported the approval of H.R. 5129, the Community Services Block Grant Modernization Act. This bill would robustly fund block grants -- administered through states and implemented through Community Action Agencies -- to reduce poverty, regardless of its cause or condition as well as expand program access, increase accountability measures, and promote innovative approaches. The bipartisan bill was approved by a vote of 246-169.

"Community Action Agencies were on the front line helping communities hit hard economically by the COVID-19 pandemic by distributing food and other emergency resources. This is just the latest in a legacy of community-building efforts. In 2019 alone, over 9 million individuals and nearly 5 million families were assisted through Community Service Block Grant funded efforts," said Congressman Bishop. "Local, state, and federal leaders -- on both sides of the aisle -- recognize the vital impact this program has on the quality of life in communities across the country. This includes Middle and Southwest Georgia."

Community Service Block Grant (CSBG) supported programs have helped local agencies implement a wide range of initiatives including job training, housing, and health services. CSBG supports a network of more than 1,000 organizations nationwide that tailor their efforts to meet local community needs and help more Americans achieve economic stability.
