U.S. Senate Unanimously Adopts National Police Week Resolution Supported by Sens. Marshall, Moran

The U.S. Senate unanimously adopted a resolution marking National Police Week and reiterating support for the men and women in law enforcement. Kansas Senators Roger Marshall, M.D. and Jerry Moran both cosponsored the resolution along with 84 of their colleagues.

"As the son of a police chief, my dad helped me understand and appreciate the work of all our law enforcement officers. The people in this line of work risk their lives to keep us and our communities safe. We should be thanking our law enforcement officers every single day, not just during National Police Week. I'm proud this important resolution unanimously passed the Senate," said Senator Marshall.

"Our men and women in blue go above and beyond the call of duty to keep our communities safe," said Senator Moran. "Today, and every day, we thank our law enforcement for their commitment to protect others and for answering the call to serve. I will always back the blue and want our law enforcement officers to know that we care about them; we respect them; and we've got your six."

The resolution honors the 576 law enforcement officers who were killed in the line of duty in 2021, including nearly 400 who died from COVID-19, as well as the 92 lost to date in 2022. Last year marked the most intentional killings of police since the September 11, 2001, attacks. In the face of an ongoing pandemic and rise in violent crime, law enforcement personnel continue to answer the call, serving their communities, often at great risk to themselves.

The resolution designates the week of May 15 through May 21, 2022, as "National Police Week," and expresses unwavering support for law enforcement officers across the United States in the pursuit of preserving safe and secure communities.

Senators Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) led this resolution.
