Sensenbrenner Earns ‘Taxpayers' Friend Award' for 2005

(Washington, DC) - The National Taxpayers Union (NTU), an independent tax watchdog group, has awarded Menomonee Falls Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner the ‘Taxpayers' Friend Award' for 2005 because of his voting record to reduce and control the tax burden on American taxpayers. Congressman Sensenbrenner, the only Member of the Wisconsin delegation to get an ‘A,' received the ninth highest score in the House of Representatives.

Each year, NTU analyzes every vote taken in the House that significantly affects taxes, spending, debt, and regulatory burdens on consumers and taxpayers. For 2005, 201 votes were taken into consideration in the House of Representatives.

"Representative Sensenbrenner's score was one of the best in the House of Representatives," said NTU President John Berthoud. "By consistently voting to reduce federal spending, taxes, and debt, Representative Sensenbrenner has truly earned the title, ‘Taxpayers' Friend.'"

"I am honored to receive the NTU's ‘Taxpayers' Friend Award,'" said Sensenbrenner. "Last year was an expensive year for taxpayers. In addition to our regular funding obligations to our troops and to the American people, we experienced massive disasters in the form of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, which required additional funds. Moreover, Congress passed some irresponsible bills, like the $286 billion highway bill, which was laden with 6,371 Members' special projects."

"We need to get away from these types of ‘porky' bills, and exercise restraint when casting votes on spending bills," Sensenbrenner continued. "If Members want to earmark funds for special projects in their district, then they should be willing and able to defend them on the floor of the House of Representatives. I have supported such a resolution, and I will gladly operate by that standard."

"Ultimately, this is the taxpayers' money we're talking about and we're the ones entrusted to spend it responsibly," Sensenbrenner concluded.
