Press Release

Date: March 15, 2022
Location: Parsippany, New Jersey

Rep. Sherrill released the following statement after the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced a plan to replace old diesel buses with new zero-emission electric models in towns across New Jersey, including 10 buses serving NJ-11's Parsippany-Troy Hills Township schools. Rep. Sherrill championed the legislation that made this program possible which, in addition to avoiding greenhouse gas emissions, will eliminate diesel soot that can impair children's lung function and exacerbate asthma.

The EPA is utilizing the 2021 American Rescue Plan (ARP) Electric School Bus Rebates and the 2021 Diesel Emissions Reduction Act (DERA) School Bus Rebates.

The EPA also stated that they plan to announce a new Clean School Bus rebate program under the bipartisan infrastructure law, fought for by Rep. Sherrill, to replace existing school buses with low- or zero-emission school buses.

"I am proud to have supported the American Rescue Plan and the Diesel Emissions Reduction Act, which are helping New Jersey schools replace old diesel buses with low or zero-emission buses, starting with Parsippany here in my district," said Rep. Sherrill. "This is a great step in our effort to fight climate change, transition to green infrastructure, and protect the health of our children. I look forward to the EPA's launch of the Clean School Bus rebate program created by the bipartisan infrastructure law I fought to pass and I can't wait to see these low-emission buses at my local school bus stop."

Rep. Sherrill is the chair of the House Science, Space, and Technology's Environment Subcommittee. She played an influential role in shaping both the American Rescue Plan and the bipartisan Infrastructure Investments and Jobs Act.

"The historic investments in clean transportation resulting from President Biden's leadership will have lasting impacts on protecting clean air for children for generations," said EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan. "This round of school bus grants from the American Rescue Plan is just the beginning. The unprecedented $5 billion investment that's on the way for clean and zero-emission school buses from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law will transform how millions of children get to school and help build a better America for a new generation."
