Sinema, Phoenix Aviation DIrector Discuss $217 Million Investment in Sky Harbor From Infrastructure Law

Arizona senior Senator Kyrsten Sinema met with City of Phoenix Director of Aviation Services Chad Makovsky to discuss how Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport plans to implement the additional $217 million investment from Sinema's bipartisan infrastructure law and opportunities for additional federal grants.

"Our bipartisan infrastructure law invests millions of dollars in Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport, and it was great to hear directly how the airport will use these historic investments to make cutting-edge upgrades for airport convenience and safety. I'll continue working with airports across our state to ensure our law is implemented efficiently and effectively," said Sinema, Chair of the Senate Subcommittee on Aviation Safety, Operations, and Innovation.

In the meeting, Makovsky detailed significant upgrades to Phoenix Sky Harbor, including the new concourse in Terminal 4, a proposed new concourse in Terminal 3, an expansion of the PHX Sky Train to the Rental Car Center, and a new taxiway to connect runways on the north and south of the airport. These infrastructure improvements will allow the airport to add flights, increase service, and reduce delays. Makovsky also described state-of-the-art technology upgrades at Phoenix Sky Harbor, including the ability for passengers to schedule a specific time to get in the TSA Security Checkpoint line. Implementing cutting-edge upgrades help eliminate uncertainty over lines and wait times, improving passenger convenience and experience.

Days after the Sinema-led infrastructure bill was signed into law in November 2021, Sinema toured Phoenix Sky Harbor with Senator Mark Kelly (Ariz.) and U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg to see firsthand the types of projects the historic law will fund. Since becoming law, Sinema has worked hand-in-hand with local leaders to ensure funds are properly implemented.

Sinema's bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs law includes $25 billion in additional investments for aviation infrastructure. The bipartisan law provides $15 billion in priority projects at every airport in the United States, $5 billion in competitive grants for terminal development and other landslide projects, and $5 billion in grants for strengthening Air Traffic Control towers and infrastructure.

Arizona airports are expected to receive a total of at least $360 million in additional federal support over the next five years from Sinema's bipartisan infrastructure law.
