Pappas Helps Pass Ban on Russian Energy Imports

Statement

Date: March 9, 2022
Issues: Energy

Today, Congressman Chris Pappas (NH-01) released the following statement after helping to pass legislation that would ban the importation of Russian oil and other forms of energy into the United States, review Russia's access to the World Trade Organization, and reauthorize and strengthen the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act:

"This bipartisan push to ban the import of Russian oil, gas, and other forms of energy will further cripple Russia's ability to fund its war machine in Ukraine and punish them for their premeditated invasion. Passing this legislation sends a clear message that we will continue to stand with Ukraine and our allies and against Putin's invasion."

Earlier this week Congressman Pappas helped introduce bipartisan legislation that would ban Russian oil imports to hold Putin accountable for his invasion of Ukraine and further deprive his regime of the resources necessary to wage his illegal invasion; and applauded President Biden's announcement yesterday that the United States would ban the importation of these sources of energy.

Following price spikes as a result of Russia's Ukraine invasion, Pappas repeatedly called on the Administration to use every tool available to cut energy costs and bolster supplies, including releasing additional barrels from our strategic reserves, encouraging lease holders to fully utilize existing permits, holding oil companies accountable, and suspending the gas tax to give Granite State families relief.

Last week, Pappas also helped introduce a bipartisan resolution calling on the International Criminal Court to immediately prosecute Vladimir Putin for war crimes should anything happen to Ukrainian President Zelenksyy, in light of reports of Russian assassination squads targeting the Ukrainian President and Putin's track record of poisoning dissidents and Russian enemies.

Last week, Pappas also helped to pass a House resolution supporting the people of Ukraine and calling for Putin to be held accountable for his invasion of Ukraine.

Pappas repeatedly called for sanctions against Russia should Vladimir Putin invade Ukraine and urged unity among NATO allies in standing against Vladimir Putin; and has called for President Biden to take all measures necessary to ensure that Vladimir Putin's premeditated, illegal invasion of Ukraine does not derail the momentum of the U.S. economy's recovery.
