Pascrell Enthusiastically Supports Meadows Contempt of Congress Citation

Statement

Date: Dec. 14, 2021
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Rep. Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-NJ-09) today applauded the House of Representatives for recommending former member of the House of Representatives and former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows be held in criminal contempt of Congress for obstructing the United States House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack investigating his role in the terrorist attack on the United States Capitol incited by Donald Trump. Pascrell called on the Department of Justice to move expeditiously to enforce the congressional subpoena.

"Mr. Meadows is trying to hide the truth of January 6, 2021 from the Congress and he must be prosecuted like any other criminal," said Rep. Pascrell. "Any person who obstructs our probe into January 6 must be found guilty and thrown in jail. And any person who participated in the treasonous January 6 conspiracy should be thrown in jail for a long time. If we fail to hold its participants and inciters fully accountable, we will only invite more lawbreaking and push our nation further down the path of authoritarianism and fascism.

"The House has done its job and now the Justice Department must move with all deliberate speed to file Mr. Meadows' criminal indictment and expedite his trial to as soon as possible. With democracy hanging in the balance, long delays are not acceptable. And no one is above the law. Because of Chairman Bennie Thompson's exhaustive efforts, we are amassing clear evidence of a massive effort by the Trump regime to overthrow American democracy."
