Congressman Anthony Brown Calls On Senate Republicans To End Obstruction, Fund The Government

Statement

Date: Dec. 2, 2021
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Anthony G. Brown (MD-04) released the following statement calling on the Senate to act in order to avert a federal government shutdown:

"Even a short government shutdown hurts our country, especially as we continue to recover, get families back on their feet and fight continued variants of the COVID-19 virus. Dedicated federal public servants have gone above and beyond throughout the pandemic to ensure benefits continue going out on time, the public has proper public health guidance, our national security remains strong and our federal government is responsive to the needs of those we serve. Instead of thanking them, Senate Republicans have only added new uncertainty to their lives as they prepare for the holidays.

"A shutdown threatens the smooth distribution of vaccines and vital government benefits for working families, seniors, and veterans. That's unacceptable. The House has done its job and passed a bill to keep our government open and operating. Senate Republicans need to end their delay tactics and political stunts. Let's put the American people first and get back to work."

The state of Maryland is home to more than 120,000 dedicated federal public servants. Congressman Brown's Congressional district, spanning both Prince George's and Anne Arundel counties, boasts over 50,000 federal employees - the fifth largest population in the country.
