WASHINGTON -- Representatives Jason Crow (CO-06) and Mike Gallagher (WI-08) today passed bipartisan legislation to build a memorial for servicemembers of the Global War on Terrorism on the National Mall. The Global War on Terrorism Memorial Location Act was offered this week as an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which was passed by the House of Representatives tonight.

"As we close out 20 years of war in Afghanistan, I'm proud to have passed my and Rep. Gallagher's legislation to build a monument on the National Mall honoring the service and sacrifice of our troops during the Global War on Terror. Those of us who have served know the transformative power of a sacred place where the American people can come to reflect, remember, and heal. A permanent tribute in our Nation's Capital will go a long way in honoring those who served this country over the past 20 years in Iraq and Afghanistan," said Representative Jason Crow.

"The National Mall tells the story of our nation's history and our heroes. There is no place more fitting to honor the service of the more than three million Americans who fought in the Global War on Terror," said Representative Mike Gallagher. "I'm grateful to see this memorial is one step closer to becoming a reality and proud to have worked with Rep. Crow in working to ensure our generation of veterans are remembered on the Mall alongside those who served before us."

"Our mission is to serve active duty servicemembers, veterans, military families, and all who've served in the Global War on Terrorism with a memorial that fully acknowledges and honors their sacrifices," said U.S. Army veteran and GWOT Memorial Foundation President & CEO Marina Jackman. "With the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan, our mission has gained even more urgency and gravity. Our warfighters and their families deserve a place to truly begin the healing process, a place of both honor and reflection. Thanks to the incredible leadership of Rep. Jason Crow, Rep. Mike Gallagher, the For Country Caucus, and so many other supporters, we're one step closer to recognizing our GWOT heroes in our nation's most sacred place -- the National Mall."

Both Gallagher and Crow are veterans of the Global War on Terrorism (GWOT), having served in the Army and the Marines, respectively.

Creation of this memorial on the National Mall has the support of the six surviving secretaries of defense--spanning Democratic and Republican Administrations--who led the Defense Department during the past 20 years of the Global War on Terrorism.

Senators Joni Ernst (R-IA) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH) are championing the bill in the Senate.
