Raleigh, NC -- Congresswoman Deborah Ross (NC-02) issued the following statement on the Texas abortion ban:

"The Texas abortion ban is an egregious and unconstitutional attack on reproductive freedom and healthcare providers that violates nearly 50 years of legal precedent," said Representative Ross. "In failing to block this law from taking effect, the Supreme Court abdicated its responsibility to guard the American people against the whims of legislatures bent on restricting our personal freedoms. This law will have an immediate impact on millions of women in Texas who will lose access to safe abortions after six weeks of pregnancy--which is before many women are even aware they are pregnant.

"The vast majority of Americans agree that people should be able to make their own decisions about their health and get the care they need. We must not allow a legislature and court that are at odds with our fundamental rights control our health care."
