Rubio, Governor Pierluisi, and Congresswoman González-Colón Encourage Biden Administration to Support Bicameral, Bipartisan MMEDS Act and Visit Puerto Rico

Statement

U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL), Governor Pedro Pierluisi (D-PR), and Congresswoman Jenniffer González-Colón (R-PR) released a statement after the Biden Administration issued its report on bringing manufacturing jobs back to America:

"With Puerto Rico's expertise and capacity, the island should be the cornerstone of any domestic manufacturing strategy. We are encouraged that the administration highlighted the importance of bringing back good manufacturing jobs to the U.S. in their Building Resilient Supply Chains, Revitalizing American Manufacturing, and Fostering Broad-based Growth. Puerto Rico, a former hub for the manufacturing of medical and pharmaceutical equipment, has the power to rebuild America's domestic supply chain. The bicameral MMEDS Act would incentivize companies to return to our nation, especially Puerto Rico, and improve the resiliency of our nation's medical supply chain. The time to act is now, we encourage the Biden Administration to visit the island and promote initiatives that include our fellow citizens."

Earlier this year, Rubio and González-Colón reintroduced their bipartisan Medical Manufacturing, Economic Development, and Sustainability (MMEDS) Act, which would encourage companies currently producing medical devices and pharmaceuticals abroad to relocate to the U.S. by providing enhanced benefits for repatriated facilities in economically distressed zones, including Puerto Rico. As a result of Rubio and González-Colón's work, White House officials from the Trump Administration visited Puerto Rico in August 2020 as a part of an "Industry Capabilities Tour" to restore manufacturing operations.
