Leger Fernández Statement On Senate Republicans Blocking Critical Democracy Reform Bill

Press Release

Date: June 22, 2021
Location: Washington, DC

Following the Senate vote blocking the For the People Act to reform and strengthen our democracy, Congresswoman Leger Fernández released the following statement:

"American democracy depends on our power to ensure free and fair elections for all of our communities. I'm pleased that Senate Democrats stood strong to protect our most basic freedom to vote and ensure that every single eligible voter can access the ballot box. Today's vote makes it clear which party values our most basic principle of American democracy, and which does not.

"The fight for our democracy will not stop here. We must not allow voter suppression and corruption in our politics to steal away our American freedom to vote. I urge my colleagues in the Senate to eliminate the filibuster so that we can move forward and safeguard our democracy."

The motion to proceed to debate the For The People Act failed to pass the Senate today. The House passed the bill back in March, and included three of Congresswoman Leger Fernández's provisions to reduce wait time at the polls, improve voting access for Native Americans, and minimize the division of Native American communities during redistricting.
