CONGRESSMAN THOMPSON NAMED TO SPECIAL TASKFORCE ON HURRICAN KATRINA

Friday, February 17, 2006

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, United States Representative Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS) was named to serve on the Special Taskforce on Hurricane Katrina. House Democratic Caucus Chairman James E. Clyburn appointed Thompson. The task force will be chaired by Rep. Gene Taylor (D-MS), a victim of the hurricane, and a leader in Congress on the recovery effort and protecting against future disasters. Congressman Thompson is the Ranking Member of the Homeland Security Committee.

"I'm eager to serve on this special task force and begin to make constructive progress toward helping our fellow Americans recover from the devastation brought by Hurricane Katrina," said Congressman Thompson. "In the absence of leadership and the face of inertia we will take up the task of helping the citizens of the Gulf Coast recover and rebuild their homes and communities and protect against future disaster, no matter what kind."
