Rep. Sherrill Votes to Establish Bipartisan Commission on January 6th Insurrection at the Capitol

Washington, DC -- Representative Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) voted today for H.R. 3233, authorizing a bipartisan National Commission to investigate the January 6th attack on the United States Capitol.This final version of the commission includes many of the elements in the commission legislation co-authored by Rep. Sherrill and Rep. Jackie Spier. Common items include ensuring the commission has an equal number of members appointed by both parties, ensuring the committee has the power of subpoena, and that the commission has the authority to investigate related domestic terrorist activities.

"Without adequately confronting what occurred on January 6th and holding those involved accountable, we will never be able to heal and move forward as a nation. This commission will help us do that," said Rep. Sherrill. "I've fought for establishing this commission to examine the insurrection since it occurred. Along with Rep. Speier, I led the charge on a number of necessary provisions that ultimately were included in the final version, so I'm very glad to see it pass the House today with bipartisan support. However, it's also painful to see so many of my colleagues continue their attempts to obstruct a full accounting of what happened. Their opposition to this commission is exactly why we need it. It is important to note that this attack was only one example of the crisis of domestic extremism our country is experiencing. I hope the commission leaves no stone unturned in the pursuit of justice and efforts to spur broader national action."

H.R. 3233, the National Commission to Investigate the January 6 Attack on the United States Capitol Complex Act, will establish a commission of 10 members, appointed in equal numbers by the majority and minority leadership in the House and Senate, to oversee the investigation into the January 6th attack. This Commission will have the authority to access federal agency, law enforcement, and intelligence information as well as have the authority to issue subpoenas to gather evidence.

The Commission will work independently of the Department of Justice's investigation. The legislation outlines that members of the commission should be experts in pertinent fields, and at the conclusion of the investigation will offer reports and recommendations to ensure a more effective response to domestic terrorist threats and for accountability measures for those who support them.
