Congressman Anthony Brown Champions Local Transportation Projects And Priorities

Statement

Congressman Anthony G. Brown (MD-04), the sole Maryland member on the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, submitted 20 local transportation projects for congressionally directed funding on behalf of jurisdictions throughout the state.

Congress is beginning work on a landmark infrastructure package that will provide transformative investments in our communities in order to help "build back better." The House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure (T&I) plans to advance surface transportation authorization legislation later this spring. With an emphasis on local input, members of Congress can submit transportation projects for consideration.

"We have to invest in quality, affordable transportation options for every American. By prioritizing the repair of our roadways and transit, we'll lift up working families and businesses in Maryland and across our country. As the only Marylander on the T&I, I'm fighting to ensure we are meeting the top transportation needs of every community. As we build back better, these projects will have a tangible impact on the lives of families around our state," said Congressman Brown.

Congressman Brown continued, "I strongly believe that we cannot build for the future with old ideas and approaches to transportation and infrastructure. It's not enough to simply rebuild our roads and fix our bridges, we need to reinvest in a modern, interconnected transportation network for future generations. Maryland has always prided itself on pursuing forward-looking solutions to the challenges confronting working families. We share a commitment to making our region the best place to work, raise a family and build a business. Our infrastructure is essential to that mission."

Projects prioritize a comprehensive vision for Maryland's transportation future. This includes significant investments in Maryland's transit future, including the Purple Line and Southern Maryland Rapid Transit (SMRT). Additionally, funding requests include repairs to high traffic highways, new investments in rail and transit-oriented development.

The projects submitted by Congressman Brown to the T&I Committee were done in close collaboration with Maryland delegation members and local leaders. Congressman Brown previously met with county leaders from Maryland's largest jurisdictions to discuss local transportation needs and projects in the month of April..

"I want to thank Congressman Brown and his team for working closely with my Administration to gather the necessary information to submit some of our top transportation priorities for potential federal funding. Federal investment in transportation locally, regionally and nationally will provide needed relief in traffic congestion, road safety and increased methods of mobility, while also creating opportunities for economic development that will create jobs and bring more resources and amenities to our communities," said Prince George's County Executive Angela Alsobrooks. "I especially want to thank Congressman Brown for his efforts to secure funding for our continued redevelopment around the New Carrollton Metro Station. This project is part of the larger vision to create new downtowns in Prince George's County. It will jumpstart economic development at what is projected to become the county's largest employment center; prioritize safety with additional right-of-way safety improvements and connectivity; and provide an excellent level of access and mobility to support additional development efforts in and around that area, as well as create a resilience for the Northeast Corridor rail system, as it is the closest station to Union Station with significant multimodal access."

"I want to thank Rep. Brown for his partnership in bringing critical federal investments to Anne Arundel County," said Anne Arundel County Executive Steuart Pittman. "This new federal support will help us revitalize and rebuild the Brooklyn Park Teen Center, employ county youth through our YouthWorks! summer jobs program, and continue our fleet electrification process to shift Anne Arundel County to an all-electric fleet."

"I appreciate Congressman Brown for championing this effort to make much-needed investments in our transportation system," said Baltimore City Mayor Brandon M. Scott. "Reliable, responsive transportation is the key to safer, stronger communities that are more equitable. I look forward to continuing this partnership on behalf of our residents."

"Building a more dynamic transportation system will help ensure our long-term recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and this federal investment would be critical in transforming our vision for future-focused infrastructure into a reality," said Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski. "We're thankful for Congressman Brown's partnership in fighting for this much-needed support as we continue our work to create more vibrant and robust transit opportunities in every community across Baltimore County."

"I want to extend thanks to Congressman Brown for going above and beyond to identify these important transportation priorities and advocate for the entire State of Maryland," said Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich. "Congressman Brown took the initiative to reach out to us in Montgomery County, listen to our local needs, and we sincerely appreciate his advocacy and leadership on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee."

"I appreciate Congressman Brown's hard work with the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure and our continued partnership with our entire Federal Delegation. Prioritizing infrastructure projects that will make Howard County and Maryland a leader in multimodal transit efficiency, pedestrian safety and regional connectivity will help us reach our goal of ensuring reliable and accessible infrastructure," said Howard County Executive Calvin Ball. "These investments are absolutely critical to improving the overall quality of life for all."
