Congressman Anthony Brown Champions Local Transportation Projects And Priorities

Statement

Congressman Anthony G. Brown (MD-04), the sole Maryland member on the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, submitted 20 local transportation projects for congressionally directed funding on behalf of jurisdictions throughout the state.

Congress is beginning work on a landmark infrastructure package that will provide transformative investments in our communities in order to help "build back better." The House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure (T&I) plans to advance surface transportation authorization legislation later this spring. With an emphasis on local input, members of Congress can submit transportation projects for consideration.

"We have to invest in quality, affordable transportation options for every American. By prioritizing the repair of our roadways and transit, we'll lift up working families and businesses in Maryland and across our country. As the only Marylander on the T&I, I'm fighting to ensure we are meeting the top transportation needs of every community. As we build back better, these projects will have a tangible impact on the lives of families around our state," said Congressman Brown.

Congressman Brown continued, "I strongly believe that we cannot build for the future with old ideas and approaches to transportation and infrastructure. It's not enough to simply rebuild our roads and fix our bridges, we need to reinvest in a modern, interconnected transportation network for future generations. Maryland has always prided itself on pursuing forward-looking solutions to the challenges confronting working families. Projects prioritize a comprehensive vision for Maryland's transportation future. This includes significant investments in Maryland's transit future, including the Purple Line and Southern Maryland Rapid Transit (SMRT). Additionally, funding requests include repairs to high traffic highways, new investments in rail and transit-oriented development.

The projects submitted by Congressman Brown to the T&I Committee were done in close collaboration with Maryland delegation members and local leaders. Congressman Brown previously met with county leaders from Maryland's largest jurisdictions to discuss local transportation needs and projects in the month of April..

Federal investment in transportation locally, regionally and nationally will provide needed relief in traffic congestion, road safety and increased methods of mobility, while also creating opportunities for economic development that will create jobs and bring more resources and amenities to our communities," said Prince George's County Executive Angela Alsobrooks. "I especially want to thank Congressman Brown for his efforts to secure funding for our continued redevelopment around the New Carrollton Metro Station. This project is part of the larger vision to create new downtowns in Prince George's County. It will jumpstart economic development at what is projected to become the county's largest employment center; prioritize safety with additional right-of-way safety improvements and connectivity; and provide an excellent level of access and mobility to support additional development efforts in and around that area, as well as create a resilience for the Northeast Corridor rail system, as it is the closest station to Union Station with significant multimodal access."

"This new federal support will help us revitalize and rebuild the Brooklyn Park Teen Center, employ county youth through our YouthWorks! summer jobs program, and continue our fleet electrification process to shift Anne Arundel County to an all-electric fleet."

The T&I Committee process for considering member projects is separate and distinct from the House Committee on Appropriations' process for considering Community Project Funding requests. Projects funded through the surface transportation authorization will be funded directly from the Highway Trust Fund, and they do not require a separate or subsequent appropriation.
