Rep. Adams Announces $123 Million for Local Colleges, Universities, and Students

Biden-Harris Administration releases American Rescue Plan funding for Charlotte Mecklenburg institutions; At least half of the funding will be distributed to students as emergency financial aid

CHARLOTTE -- Today, Congresswoman Alma Adams (NC-12) announced more than $123 million in emergency funding for colleges, universities, and students in North Carolina's 12th Congressional District under the American Rescue Plan. The funding will help local institutions cope with the severe financial fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic and continue serving their students safely. At least half of the funding each institution receives will be distributed in the form of emergency cash assistance grants to students who are facing hunger, homelessness, and other hardship.

The American Rescue Plan provides $36 billion for nearly 3,500 public and private, nonprofit colleges and universities nationwide.

"Higher education is one of our Charlotte Mecklenburg community's most valuable assets," said Congresswoman Adams. "The American Rescue Plan makes historic investments that secure the future of our colleges and universities. These grants will provide struggling students with urgent relief that will allow them to stay on track and complete their studies. I am proud to have supported the American Rescue Plan, and I applaud the Biden-Harris Administration for its relentless focus on supporting our students, defeating the pandemic and building back a better economy."

The colleges and universities in North Carolina's 12th District receiving funding under the American Rescue Plan are:

Central Piedmont Community College: $ 39,145,958
Davidson College: $ 3,107,477
Johnson C. Smith University: $ 7,489,402
Queens University of Charlotte: $ 4,336,336
University of North Carolina ‐ Charlotte: $ 69,490,756

Students should contact their institutions for more information about how they can apply for an emergency grant.

The American Rescue Plan also includes nearly $3 billion in additional funding -- which will be distributed at a later date -- for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs), other Minority-Serving Institutions, and other under-resourced institutions.
