Majority Whip Clyburn Praises President Biden's Inclusive Agenda And First 100 Days In Office

Statement

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- U.S. House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn released the following statement tonight regarding President Biden's speech to a joint session of Congress:

"On the 99th day of the Biden-Harris Administration, President Biden's first address to a joint session of Congress made clear that his administration has wasted no time in tackling the challenges facing our country. In just three short months, President Biden has led a remarkable response to the coronavirus pandemic, implementing a national plan to defeat the virus and working with Democrats in Congress to enact the American Rescue Plan to provide the resources needed to end the public health and economic crises the pandemic has wrought. Thanks to this administration's laser focus, our country is beginning to get back on track.

"The president understands that rescuing our nation from the pandemic must only be the first step. The crises of the past year have exposed and exacerbated faults that must be remedied. We must build back better, addressing systemic inequities and ensuring that the recovery from this pandemic includes all Americans. The American Jobs Plan proposed by the White House last month is a key step toward building and sustaining a robust and inclusive post-pandemic economy, and Congress has already begun the process toward its passage.

"Tonight, President Biden outlined another key step that we must take to build back better: supporting American families, the foundation of a strong nation. I applaud the American Families Plan and am committed to enacting this inclusive and impactful proposal. In order for our country to live up to its full potential, we must make the greatness of America accessible and affordable for all families. The American Families Plan recognizes that this includes expanding infrastructure to include broadband, developing high-quality education to expand opportunity, increasing economic support to eliminate poverty, providing food assistance to prevent hunger, health care that is affordable, paid family leave to stabilize families and childcare to support workers.

"As we work to enact these critically important policies into law, President Biden is confronting all of the challenges facing our country. He has demonstrated that he is willing to work with Congress to find agreement on addressing such longstanding and systemic concerns as police brutality, gun violence, and injustices in our immigration system. This president has shown the desire and determination to make progress on these difficult issues, and congressional Democrats stand with him. I urge our Republican colleagues to join us in working in good faith to address these problems.

"I believe the Biden-Harris Administration has set the right tone and tenor for the times in which we find ourselves. I look forward to continuing to work with President Biden and his administration to achieve this critically important agenda to move our country toward the promise of a more perfect union."
