Congressman Mike Rogers made the following statement today after the House voted to pass H.R. 8 and H.R. 1446, both bills that could weaken our Second Amendment rights.

"As a proud gun owner, these two bills disgust me. I stand in strong opposition to them as they are just more attempts by the left to treat our Second Amendment as a second-class right," Rogers said.

H.R. 8 promises to include a so-called "universal" background check, but as has been proven time and time again, universal background checks won't stop a criminal from obtaining a firearm. The universal background checks could lead to a federal gun registry, forcing law-abiding citizens to register their guns with the federal government and could make handing a firearm to another individual a crime.

H.R. 1446 would allow Washington bureaucrats to indefinitely delay firearm purchases curbing the rights of millions of law-abiding citizens to protect and defend their families. It would eliminate the "3-day proceed to sale" that prevents the government from delaying firearm purchases. In its place would be an ability for the government to drag out their red tape approval process.

"I am not surprised that Speaker Pelosi and her radical Democrat colleagues continue to attack our Second Amendment rights. This is a continued pattern of their disregard for our Constitution. I will continue to stand up and fight for the Second Amendment," Rogers added.

Rogers serves as Ranking Member on the House Armed Services Committee. As a strong supporter of the Second Amendment, Rogers is the only member of the Alabama House Delegation with an A+ rating with the NRA.
