Today, United States Representative Emanuel Cleaver, II (D-MO) was appointed Chair of the House Financial Services Subcommittee on Housing, Community Development, and Insurance. Cleaver was selected unanimously by his Democratic colleagues to chair the powerful subcommittee.

"It is my great honor to be selected by my colleagues as the Chair of the Subcommittee on Housing, Community Development, and Insurance," said Congressman Cleaver. "As someone who spent the first several years of my life living in a shack with no electricity or running water--and several more after that in public housing--I understand how pivotal stable housing is to realizing the American dream. I look forward to working with Chairwoman Waters and my colleagues on the Financial Services Committee to do everything in our power to expand our nation's affordable housing stock, end homelessness in America, and confront the scourge of this pandemic in our communities and insurance market."

The Subcommittee on Housing, Community Development, and Insurance has oversight of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) as well as broad jurisdiction over U.S. housing policy. The subcommittee handles matters related to homeownership, rural housing, rental housing, community and economic development, homeowner insurance and government-sponsored insurance programs, such as the Terrorism Risk Insurance Act (TRIA) and the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).

"Since coming to Congress, my only personal dream was to chair the Subcommittee on Housing," Congressman Cleaver said. "While most members dream of becoming Speaker or joining leadership or chairing a full committee, I've only ever wanted to lead this subcommittee because I know the monumental impact affordable housing can have on American families. We've got a lot of work to do, but I look forward to working with each and every member of this subcommittee on getting things done for the American people and ensuring that everyone has somewhere to rest their head at night in a place they call home."
