WHITEHOUSE STATEMENT ON DOJ WATCHDOG'S FAMILY SEPARATION REPORT

Statement

Date: Jan. 14, 2021
Location: Washington, DC

Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), a senior member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, released the following statement on the U.S. Department of Justice Office of the Inspector General's damning new report showing how DOJ leadership helped push for the Trump administration's family separation policy:

"This report confirms that senior Department of Justice officials--including the Attorney General and the Deputy Attorney General--abetted President Trump's plan to tear apart families. These officials ignored objections from U.S. Attorneys and others within the Department, who recognized the havoc and heartbreak that would follow. It is a dark episode in the Department's history.

"We are only beginning to account for the damage President Trump and his cronies wrought at the Department. I look forward to working with Judge Garland to restore public trust in the Department."
