Issue Position: Addressing the Housing Crisis

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2020

Decent housing is a right, not a privilege. I say guaranteed housing for every New Yorker. No more homeless shelters - I believe we should give housing vouchers to families so that they remain together and build lives within our communities. I will work to strengthen the Emergency Tenant Protection Act - there are some specific aspects of the bill that have to be changed, including the passage of Good Cause Eviction legislation. Passing the Home Stability Support Act, creating and expanding environmentally sustainable affordable housing and homeownership opportunities, and protecting NYCHA are some of my priorities.

In the fight against the gentrification of our community, we must protect small homeowners. District 31 is home to tens of thousands of families that build wealth and equity through homeownership. Sadly, our families constantly fall victim to foreclosure, an unequal property tax system and tax debt collected through lien sales that hurt our ability to own. The neighborhood also has a significant number of vacant homes. I will fight to make sure that everyone has a decent place to call home but ensuring we introduce and co-sponsor legislation and promote community initiatives that would work to eliminate these roadblocks to black and brown homeownership.
