CAMP KEEPS FUNDS FOR MMI IN HOUSE-SENATE COMPROMISE ON DEFENSE BILL

Dec 21, 2005

Washington, DC - In addition to increased benefits, pay and combat resources for troops serving around the globe, the Department of Defense Appropriations Act conference report includes funding the Midland-based Michigan Molecular Institute.

U.S. Rep. Dave Camp (R-Midland) voted for the bill that sets funding levels for the nation's military and national defense needs and individual defense projects. One of those endeavors includes $400,000 for MMI for research in sensors and decontamination

"MMI is doing critical research that will help keep our troops safe in the field of battle," said Camp. "These funds are extremely difficult to come by, and the fact that MMI has again received federal dollars goes to show the quality of the work being done right here in mid-Michigan."

The Act includes multiple provisions to improve the quality of life for men and women in the nation's active, guard and reserve forces. The legislation provides for:

• A 3.1 percent military pay raise, effective January 1, 2006

• $1.2 billion for body armor and other gear

• $50 billion in emergency funding for military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, of which $1 billion is for additional equipment for the Army and Air National Guards and the Army Reserve

The legislation now awaits approval by the Senate, which is expected to act today, before the legislation goes to the President for final signature.
