Issue Position: Legislative Priorities

Issue Position

Representative Bill Rehm (R) has introduced legislation or strongly supports legislation intended to:

Increase penalties for Lilly's Law, or the "Three Strikes" Law

Close the loopholes in Second degree murder.

Close DWI loopholes + stronger penalties for repeat DWI offenders.

End the issuance of Driver's licenses to illegal immigrants.
This current practice has allowed criminal enterprises to form selling their services to help illegal immigrants obtain driver's licenses. This practice has not increased highway safety as promised. NM has now issued over 94,000 driver's license to suspected illegal immigrants. Federal government has mandated all states must have a secure driver's license that can be used to board aircraft. This REAL ID act has met with opposition from several states because of the unfunded mandate. The implementation date has been extended several times and currently is set for January 2013 (extended to summer 2013). The Federal threat is; our State DL will not allow us to board an aircraft and you will be required to show your passport.

End social promotion.
Allow teachers to teach at grade level and not having some students holding the rest of the class back.

Reduce regulations on all business and helping promote more oil drilling within NM.
Oil and gas is the single most contributors to our State budget. The US must become oil independent.

End Golden Parachutes for State employees who resign or are terminated.
These individuals should not receive future payments to resign their employment so they can take another job.
