Proven strategies to prevent crime: community policing, reinstating proven behavioral health systems with mental health and drug treatment, fixing our justice system, keeping guns out of the hands of criminals.
I believe we have to support our criminal justice system at every level if we mean to put a real dent in our drug and crime problems in New Mexico. That's why I support:
Fighting for increased funding for our public safety officers and for our court system;
Giving our public safety officers additional tools, such as the Extreme Risk Firearm Protection Order, to apply when someone is at imminent risk of using a firearm to insure themselves or others;
Investing in mental and behavioral health programs and in drug addiction rehabilitation to strike at the root causes of crime--rehabilitate those whose crimes originate in drug abuse and mental health issues;
Common sense reform to our gun laws -- allowing law enforcement officers to obtain Extreme Risk Firearm Protection Orders from a judge when there is probable cause and the imminent risk that an individual may cause bodily harm of themselves or others -- giving the individual a full hearing within 15 days if a judge approves the temporary removal of firearms.
