Issue Position: Public Safety

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2020

Public safety is my top priority. It is unacceptable that last year, New Mexico had the highest property crime rate and second-highest violent crime rate per capita in the United States.

But there is a solution. With strong leadership in our community, and bipartisan, comprehensive actions from the legislature, I believe we can get our local law enforcement what they need to curb crime in Albuquerque.

Last session, I was proud to be a co-sponsor of a bipartisan public safety package that addresses crime in New Mexico at every level. My part of the bill increased requirements for removal of DUI interlock devices. I am committed to reducing drunk driving in our state. I am proud to have been named a Legislative Champion by Mothers Against Drunk Driving and will continue fighting on this issue.

Thanks to the hard work of Mayor Tim Keller, crime rates are falling this year. In May, I stood with Mayor Tim Keller as we outfitted our Albuquerque police officers with new vehicles.

But there is still a lot of work to be done. It will take time and dedication from both sides of the aisle to solve our crime problems. Last session was a great first step and I am excited to continue the work. I'm taking proactive steps to effect change, and I promise that as your representative, I will continue to stand with Police Chief Michael Geier and the men and women who keep Albuquerque safe.

At the same time, I have always viewed the issue of crime through a lens on mental health. Providing people with options to rid their lives of drugs; providing early childhood education programs, as well as adult education programs outside of a prison--these are long term solutions that require dedication to change tough problems.
