House Armed Services Committee Vice Chair, 30-year Army veteran and 2019 NDAA conferee Congressman Anthony G. Brown (MD-04) released the following statement in response to President Trump's assertion that Senate Armed Services Chair Jim Inhofe promised provisions to redesignate military bases honoring Confederate leaders would not be included in the final FY21 National Defense Authorization Act:

"I will strenuously resist any attempt by Senator Inhofe or any other Republican doing the President Trump's bidding to delay, weaken or eliminate our bipartisan efforts to remove the names of traitorous leaders from military property during the conference committee process

"President Trump is shamefully committed to honoring Confederate traitors who fought against the United States to preserve slavery and a system of white supremacy and systemic oppression. Bipartisan supermajorities in Congress ignored his pitiful veto threat and we will not suffer any more of his delusional machinations in the President's desperate attempt at dog-whistle politics.

"I dare the President to veto legislation that pays our troops more and makes critical investments in our national security over his race-baiting obsession with preserving the Confederacy."

Congressman Brown and Congressman Don Bacon (R-NE) introduced a bipartisan provision to establish a firm process to rename military installations honoring leaders of the Confederacy within a year. The provision was included in the House FY21 National Defense Authorization Act, which passed 295 - 125. A similar bipartisan measure was included in the Senate bill which passed 86 - 14.
