Guthrie Leads Charge to Protect Medicare Advantage

Statement

Date: Feb. 10, 2020
Location: Washington D.C.

Congressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02) led 338 fellow members of the U.S. House of Representatives in a bipartisan effort to protect the Medicare Advantage program.

"Thousands of Kentucky's seniors rely on Medicare Advantage for health care coverage, and I want to protect Medicare for generations to come," said Guthrie. "As the administration sets payment policies for the next fiscal year, I wanted to make sure that key decision makers know the importance of Medicare Advantage. This program gives seniors the flexibility to pursue innovative, supplemental health care services on top of their traditional Medicare plans."

The Medicare Advantage program allows select Medicare-eligible patients to choose individually tailored insurance plans operated by private companies to supplement traditional Medicare benefits. Congressman Guthrie, along with Earl Blumenauer (OR-03), Tony Cárdenas (CA-29), and Mike Kelly (PA-16) and 335 other members of the House, wrote to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to urge continued support for the Medicare Advantage program.

"Millions of seniors depend on Medicare Advantage plans to provide comprehensive, affordable health care as they age," wrote Guthrie, Cárdenas, Blumenauer, and Kelly. "Medicare Advantage offers affordable, high-quality care coordination, disease management programs, out-of-pocket spending limits, access to community-based programs, additional supplemental benefits such as vision and dental coverage, and often prescription drug coverage for no additional premium. The program also serves vulnerable and underserved populations that have special needs and chronic conditions and provides supports for seniors at critical times of their life."
