Rep. Adams' Statement on the Administration's Heartless SNAP Final Rule

Statement

Date: Dec. 4, 2019
Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Alma S. Adams, Ph.D. (NC-12), Vice Chair of the House Committee on Agriculture, released the following statement after an announcement today from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) that the Administration will tighten restrictions on the eligibility of Able-Bodied Adults Without Dependents (ABAWDs) for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), benefits.

"Not even a week after Thanksgiving, the Trump Administration has finalized a rule which jeopardizes the food security of nearly 700,000 of our poorest and most vulnerable Americans. At a time when most people's wallets are already stretched thin, the Administration has decided to push forward on this misguided and cruel regulation which hurts poor people.

The USDA's own data shows that those affected have an average income of one-third of the poverty line. Many of these SNAP recipients are hardworking people who are trying to make the ends meet. Many are attempting to find work or face hardships that prevent them from doing so. This rule kicks them while they are down.

The USDA's motto is "do right and feed everyone." Yet, they are acting like Scrooges and putting politics over feeding people at the height of the holiday season. This is simply wrong."
