Domestic Violence

Domestic Violence

This year approximately 1 million women will be seriously assaulted by an intimate partner. These women are our mothers, sisters, daughters, and loved ones. Our society can no longer tolerate such crime. Please join me in the fight against domestic violence by recognizing October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Studies show domestic violence touches all races, ages, and genders. This epidemic transcends all social and economic boundaries. As this violence shatters our nation's homes, it is also shaping the nation's future. Young children affected by domestic violence are more likely to grow up to become victims and abusers. We must put a stop to this violent cycle and ensure a better future for everyone.

Beginning in 1987, October has been named Domestic Violence Awareness Month. I urge everyone to participate. Wear a purple ribbon, the symbol to spread domestic violence awareness. Organize or participate in a wish list drive where donations of necessary items are made to a local domestic violence shelter. Give an old cell phone to the Call To Protect Program sponsored by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. Your phone will assist victims of domestic violence who many encounter emergency situations.

Working together we can put an end to domestic violence in our nation. Please join us in the fight by participating in your community.
