Gov. Lujan Grisham statement recognizing Hispanic Heritage Month

Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham on Monday issued the following statement in recognition of National Hispanic Heritage Month, which began Sunday and runs through Oct. 15:

"Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity to celebrate our culture, our history, our faith and our commitment to continued progress toward equity and equality. New Mexico is proud of its centuries of Hispanic heritage, one of the bedrocks of our collective state history and culture.

"It's a diverse heritage, defined as much by the engineering marvels of our acequia and land grant communities as by the dances and songs that tell the stories of generations of innovation and resilience.

"New Mexico's Hispanic community includes some of the world's most celebrated authors, artists, business leaders and civic activists. They have left an indelible mark on our national identity, their works helping to define the American experience.

"Now more than ever, we must be unabashedly proud of our diversity; it can be a unifying force, an agent of positivity and strength, and in New Mexico, this month and indeed every month, we are proud of our Hispanic Heritage."
