TIBERI SAYS TIME NOT RIGHT FOR COSTLY NEW MOON MISSION
10/25/05

WASHINGTON-Citing budget concerns, Congressman Pat Tiberi (R-Delaware County) says the time is not right for the nation to pursue a proposed $104 billion program to return man to the moon.

"No one has said where the money should come from," Tiberi said. He noted that even if funds for existing space programs were reallocated, the moon mission would require substantial new amounts of money. The proposal calls for spending $24 billion over the next five years, and $104 billion through 2018.

"We should not discount the importance of much of the work done by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration," said Tiberi. "Space exploration offers many benefits to both our nation and the international community."

"However, I simply am not convinced that it is fiscally responsible to allocate so much money to space exploration when considering our nation's current deficits. I support President Bush's plan for space leadership and advancements, but I find it difficult to justify the funding necessary given our current budget situation."
