Rep. Antonio Delgado Applauds Passage of H.R. 8

Statement

Date: Feb. 27, 2019
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Guns

Today, U.S. Representative Antonio Delgado joined Members of Congress on both sides of the aisle to vote for the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019, which requires universal background checks for gun purchases and transfers. The bill includes reasonable exceptions that allow for family members to gift or loan firearms amongst each other; an amendment Delgado cosponsors ensures the exception applies to step-parents and step-children as well.

"Today, bipartisan Members of Congress took the most significant step towards gun safety that we have seen in years, finally achieving universal background checks while ensuring reasonable provisions for family transfers," Delgado said. "The gun lobby has too long had a stronghold over Congress; today's vote is a big step forward in breaking that status quo and keeping our communities safe."

The Bipartisan Background Checks Act helps to prevent gun violence by requiring that every person who buys or receives a gun undergoes a background check. Reasonable exceptions are included in the bill for hunting, target shooting, and self-defense, as well as to allow gun owners to continue to gift or loan firearms to close family members. The clarifying amendment that Delgado cosponsors ensures step-parents and step-children are also included as close family.
