Issue Position: Legislator Spending and Per Diem

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2018

During the current fiscal crisis, legislators should lead by example by cutting their own per diem. I n my first term, I pre-filed legislation to stop irresponsible legislative spending, specifically on expensive meals and hotels. Meal reimbursements during session will be capped at a certain, frugal price per meal ($8 for breakfast and lunch, $12 for dinner), which contrasts sharply with the $40 dinners enjoyed by a few legislators previously. This legislation will also prevent legislators from pocketing per diem while they are at home. I have also voted on other measures throughout my time in the legislature to cut legislator per diem. Legislators should be held to a high standard of fiscal responsibility.
