Issue Position: Responsible Gun Laws

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2018
Issues: Guns

Eliminate straw purchases & gun show loopholes. Increase purchase age. Improve state background check system and protections in cases of Domestic Violence and PFAs.

Gun show loopholes must be removed and more efficient background checks should be done for all purchases. Currently, purchases of "long" guns (from shotguns to AR-15's) at gun shows do require a PA State background check if the purchase is from a licensed gun dealer -- as are many vendors at gun shows. However, individuals who are not registered gun dealers are often also vendors. These individuals may sell long guns without performing a PA State background check.

I will fight hard to push responsible gun legislation like this. Laws that will help protect families and loved ones, innocent bystanders and should help to reduce suicides with guns.

However, I am not calling for all guns to be outlawed or any law abiding citizens to turn in their guns! I believe in the rights provided for in the Second Amendment. While we do need existing gun laws to be implemented more effectively, and additional legislation to handle the issues above and a few others, Pennsylvanians should maintain their rights to own firearms.
