Issue Position: Gun Violence Prevention

Issues: Guns

Government has no greater responsibility than ensuring the safety and security of its people. Tragically, our government has failed to live up to that sacred responsibility. Well, enough is enough. We need solutions to this issue now. I've proposed five pieces of legislation that I would sponsor as a State Senator.

Universal Background Checks: As a State Representative, I proposed a universal background checks bill that closed a loophole that allows private, non-licensed sellers to sell long-barrel guns, including assault rifles, without a background check on the buyer. Background checks should cover all sales and transfers (excluding familial transfers).

Gun Violence Restraining Order (GVRO): As with many of these commonsense solutions, both liberal and conservatives support the GVRO. This Order would empower a family member or friend of a gun-owner who could do harm to himself or others to seek a court order allowing a court to temporarily seize the gun-owner's firearm. The GVRO has been an effective way to prevent gun violence in states like California and could have prevented the most recent tragedy in Parkland, FL.

No Fly, No Buy: If we don't allow suspected to terrorists to board airplanes, we shouldn't allow them to purchase firearms. No Fly, No Buy would put this simple idea into law.

Lost and Stolen: One important way to ensure that guns aren't falling into the wrong hands is to better keep track of guns that are lost or stolen. The Lost and Stolen rule would require gun-owners to report lost or stolen firearms.

Assault Weapons Ban: Weapons of war belong on the battlefield, not our streets. We need a ban on military-style assault weapons couple with a voluntary buy-back program.
