Issue Position: Protecting our Coastline

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2018

As the demand for power grows, so too will the need for increased production from sources like solar, wind and hydropower. Some argue that offshore drilling for oil and gas is needed to meet this increase in demand. I do not believe this is in South Carolina's best interest.

Our beaches, sea islands and marshes are the most beautiful in the nation, driving a $20 billion tourism industry. Massive refineries, gas storage tanks, maintenance and operating facilities are not economically compatible with existing coastal residential and resort development, protected sea islands, estuaries and tidal marsh refuges.

We owe it future generations to protect our most precious assets. We cannot take a chance. We must do whatever it takes to preserve this economic paradise; it is made of gold.
