Washington, D.C. - House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today celebrating the 70th anniversary of Social Security on August 14, 2005:

"For 70 years, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's visionary idea - Social Security - has meant dignity and independence for millions of Americans who have relied on its guaranteed benefit during retirement, disability, or the death of a loved one.

"Social Security has never failed to pay promised benefits, and Democrats will fight to make sure that Republicans do not turn a guaranteed benefit into a guaranteed gamble.

"Democrats stand ready to address the challenges facing Social Security's solvency, but this cannot begin until Republicans begin talking about ways to make Social Security stronger, not weaker."
