Press Release

Date: Sept. 15, 2017
Location: Washington, DC

Last night President Trump formally signed S.J.Res. 49 -- a joint resolution condemning the violence and domestic terror attack in Charlottesville, Virginia on August 12, 2017.

Originally introduced by Senator Warner of Virginia, Congressman Tom Garrett introduced the House companion bill and subsequently garnered co-sponsorships by every member of the Virginia delegation displaying a united and bipartisan front.

Upon this resolution's formal signing into law, Rep. Garrett introduced the following statement:

"I commend President Trump, Senator Warner, and my colleagues in the Virginia delegation for working in bipartisan fashion to send a message that violence and terror have no place in our nation. What we saw in Charlottesville does not represent the values, ideals or majority opinion of America and as we continue to rebuild, we must remember there is more that unites us as a people, than divides us."

The rally in Charlottesville resulted in the deaths of Charlottesville resident Heather Heyer, Lieutenant H. Jay Cullen and Trooper Pilot Berke M.M. Bates of the Virginia State Police. This resolution also honors their memory.
